Definitely a dark-throated female and not a male.
As mentioned in the Collins Guide some females appear "almost as dark-throated as males" when worn, and since the photo is taken in January, the abrasion is almost 6 months on.
The same guide also establishes that 1.winter males only differ from adults by their juvenile remiges and retrices.
Best regards
Peter

Beskrivelse: Seen on a guided night tour together with Noam Weiss of the IBRCE in Eilat. Noam can be contacted on nbayda@yahoo.com. Note the black frame around the face and the lack of "trousers".
Beskrivelse: This is probably last winters Crested Honey Buzzard returning for its second winter in Eilat, now in adult female plumage. Apart from what can be seen in the pictures we only noted that the bird felt unusually big for a European Honey Buzzard and had broad wings when it flew short distances between the palms. Is it possible to tell what species it is from the pictures? Is the throat pattern possible for a European Honey Buzzard? Any comments would be most appreciated!
After Jesper Segergren has picked some video stills from his film today we are now certain that this bird is a Crested Honey Buzzard. His pictures show the wingshape and the pattern of the underwing. You can find them on http://www.pbase.com/botb/israel_200809
Yes, undoubtedly a Crested H.B.
When seeing only the rightside, larger image, the proportions seem a bit odd, with too bulky wings, somewhat small eyes relative to the head and bill, and the distinctly darker line along the jaws ; all raise suspicion.
When viewing the upper left image, however, the id. falls into place, as the tail-projection is too long for P. Apivorus. Correspondingly the primary-projection is shorter than on P.A.
You could say that the secondaries are longer in Crested giving reason for the observers to report:"had broad wings when it flew...."

Beskrivelse: This bird does not fit anything I've seen on my previous trips to Israel, eastern Turkey, Georgia or Kuwait. Grey-orange belly, black breast, grey back and large white wing-panel. Any suggestions?
Beskrivelse: Distant shot of a male. We were surprised by the overall grey appearance of the birds. They almost totally lacked the reddish tones around head and throat that are shown in litterature. Note also that the legs are orange, not yellow.
Beskrivelse: Distant shot of a displaying male to the right and a somewhat duller coloured female to the left. Note the grey head and neck on the bird to the left with only a slight tinge of brown on the lower neck.
Beskrivelse:
Yoav Perlman (yoavpe@bgu.ac.il) can show you this species. In one hour we saw and heard four different birds. The cooperative individual on the picture was photographed at late dusk with 2 s shutter speed.
Beskrivelse:
Photo taken in poor light conditions. A total of four birds were seen hunting around the fields during a guided tour with Noam Weiss (nbayda@yahoo.com).
