Billede information:
Fugleart: Blå Kærhøg x Steppehøg - (Circus cyaneus x Circus macrourus) - Hen Harrier x Pallid Harrier
Titel / info: mulig hybrid
Lokalitet: Falsterbokanalen, Falsterbo, Skåne, Sverige
Dato: 28. september 2013

This harrier passed the Falsterbo Canal, 28 Sept. at 1:40PM. The jizz and flight set was like Hen Harrier, but the head and underbody pattern was rather similar to juvenile Pallid Harrier, with well-marked head-pattern and seemingly unstreaked or very faintly streaked, pale orange underbody. It was suspected as a hybrid Hen X Pallid Harrier on the base of combination of the above mentioned characters. But could a 1-year Hen Harrier combine extremely well-marked head with atypically indistinct streaking (if any) in underbody?

Interesting bird that is!. Apparently some juvenile Hen shows unstreaked underparts as can be seen here
Also with reference to hudsonius, which we probably not should refere to reagarding the above bird...
This hybrid looks rather similar to the Falsterbo bird.
Are there any more pic of this bird Klaus?

The referred unstreaked juvenile from Bornholm was a bird i saw myself, which - together with a few birds more, made me realize than almost unstreaked Hen´s do exist. What is special about the Falsterbo bird is, that it too had head-pattern very similar to Pallid. Few Hen´s I have seen have appeared so contrasting regarding head-pattern. As jizz, wing-shape and flight set was practically identical to Hen Harrier it is likely that the bird indeed was a Hen. Judged from the hudsonius I have seen in USA, they all had a darker and deeper reddish ground colour to the underparts and darker head-pattern, as the least pale-marked Pallid or even darker.
I have photoes of the upperparts as well, which could be uploaded.

Thanks Klaus.
I realise that the identification of harriers such as the one here, be it a possible Hen x Pallid or an unusual Hen, or for that matter, Pallid - is probably not always as straightforward as some of us might think. The discussion of Hen x Pallid, with a couple of birds here on Netfugl, all seemed rather straightforward, however, not all 'peculiar' birds are though. Much to be learned!
For what it´s worth, it would be interesting to see more pic Klaus!
