How can I publish my pictures to Netfugl?

You have to upload your pictures to Netfugl. However, before you can upload pictures you must have an user profile. You can register as a user here. You are always welcome to send us a picture of a rare bird of current interest in which case we might upload it for you.

How does uploading of pictures work?

When you upload a picture it will at first only be visible for the administrator group at Netfugl. The picture will not be added to the gallery before it has been approved by Netfugl. Netfugl has defined a set of criteria that has to be fulfilled for a picture to be accepted, if not the picture will be rejected. If Netfugl rejects your picture you will be informed by e-mail. The e-mail will include information on why your picture has been rejected. The criteria set up by Netfugl are stated below. Please note that there are both technical criteria as well as criteria with regard to the quality of the picture.

Technical criteria

If the technical criteria are not met the picture will not be uploaded to Netfugl.

You don't need to prepare the thumbnail in order to upload the photo. But if you like you may as well prepare the thumbnail. If not the thumbnail will be generated automatic.

Maximum size of the thumb nail: 135 pixels wide x 90 pixels high, 12 kb.

Maximum size of the large picture: 1280 pixels wide x 1280 pixels high, 250 kb.

If the pictures are larger than stated above it is not technically possible to upload them to Netfugl.

Quality criteria

The criteria stated below are based on years of experience with picture-editing for the Internet. Moreover, we have obtained good advice from skilled photographers.

Netfugl will not go into details about editing (cropping, sharpening) but it is of great importance to us to maintain a high quality standard for the gallery. We can only recommend that you as a photographer work on your pictures before you upload them to Netfugl.

Netfugl has a number of requirements to the size of the picture in the light of the idea that size and quality of the picture should be in harmony.

Size/kb

It will hardly ever be necessary to exceed the pixel and kb limits. As a rule the size of a standard photo should be approximately 75-115 kb.

We accept that pictures of a very high quality may be bigger (app. 150 kb). In a few exceptional cases a picture may be bigger than 150 kb.

Number of pixels

If a picture is not supposed to be enlarged it should be maximum 800 pixels wide. An enlargeable picture should be between 950 and 1024 pixels wide. For high-quality pictures – so-called wall papers – dimensions of up to 1280 x 1024 pixels are (only just) acceptable.

Why all these criteria?

Many large pictures on Netfugl strain the server. Moreover, we wish to consider those who do not have a broadband connection to the Internet.

It is no secret that there has been theft of pictures from Netfugl – pictures have been downloaded and published elsewhere without permission being asked of the photographer. This kind of theft happens in spite of copyright information on all the pictures. It is difficult to prevent but the fact that the pictures are no more than app. 75 – 115 kb means that they may be difficult to reproduce in print.

Which other criteria does Netfugl use to choose or reject pictures?

Netfugl reserves the right not to publish or to delete from the website pictures that are already online in the same or a similar version on other Danish websites with galleries like that of Netfugl. There is no reason to maintain double galleries. We do not systematically check whether pictures are already online. Therefore, the administration of this may seem accidental and unjust. This is not the intention. However, this work is done by several people and the process will vary accordingly, Netfugl regrets this.

Netfugl frequently gets criticised for the choice of pictures put online. Some think the quality varies too much, too many pictures are of a poor quality. Others think the criteria are too strict and that they are being “pursued” by Netfugl because only a small number of their submitted pictures are published. Others again think that there are too many pictures of foreign and “irrelevant” species or of handheld birds. These contrasting views are hard to unite. The primary aim of the gallery is to have a broad selection of pictures of especially DK and VP species. We find pictures important that illustrate a species and show as many characteristics as possible so that the gallery can be used in connection with definition of a species to the delight of the many users. There is no doubt that highly aesthetic pictures achieved through the photographer’s hard work to get “the picture” will be published. However, please note that the photographer and Netfugl may not necessarily agree on this...

Max. 30 pictures per species

Netfugl has chosen to set a limit to the number of pictures per species in the gallery. This limit is presently 30 pictures per species. However, the limit is “theoretical”, i.e. in practice some pages contain more than 30 pictures per species. It goes without saying that the criteria for publishing 30+ pictures are very severe, but for the really brilliant pictures by no means impossible to meet.

A lot of species are already represented by more than 30 pictures. Some species are represented by more than 100 pictures. This means that Netfugl will delete pictures that seem no longer to have a value for the gallery. Pictures of rare birds (i.e. rare in Denmark) will always be of great interest and the limit of 30 pictures does not apply to these.

What does Netfugl do to improve the quality of the gallery?

Digital cameras have undergone a revolution. A picture considered good three years ago is not necessarily a good picture today. Therefore, Netfugl will continuously delete pictures that seem to have lost their value to the gallery. All photographers whose picture(s) we delete will be informed via e-mail. The limit of 30 pictures does not mean that Netfugl consistently will delete pictures in order not to exceed the limit.

Can there be compromises with regard to the 30-picture-limit and high-quality-criteria?

Obviously, we must make room to represent the seasons in the gallery. Therefore, we will make compromises when the cranes migrate, or when honey buzzards arrive in great numbers, or when the season for seabirds makes pictures of seabirds possible, etc. There is, however, no reason to publish too many pictures of the same species. Should Netfugl decide that a picture does not provide enough new and relevant it may not be chosen.

We also make room for publishing of a picture in which the definition of the bird has proven to be difficult in order to get help from other users of Netfugl.

The photographer’s self-criticism

A lot of photographers enjoy telling a story through his/her pictures – typically it takes two or more pictures to tell a story satisfactorily. In a few cases Netfugl can depart from the 30-picture-rule. However, in most cases we will ask a photographer to do a collage in order to tell his/her story.

In other cases Netfugl has received three, four or five pictures of the same species and been asked to pick out the best picture. This procedure prolongs execution of all requests. Therefore, we encourage all photographers to pick out the best pictures themselves instead of getting Netfugl to spend time looking through the pictures and judging which is the best picture.

Altogether we encourage all photographers to display self-criticism. One guideline could be to ask yourself whether you as a photographer would find the picture in question relevant if it was taken by another photographer. There are a lot of inexpensive possibilities for establishing your own picture gallery. Several of the photographers that supply Netfugl with pictures also have their own home page with pictures that are not relevant to the Netfugl gallery.

Where and how do I upload pictures to Netfugl?

Log on to your user profile with your username and password. Press “update your profile”. In the left column click ”upload gallery photo”. From here you just fill in your subjects in the form.

Afterwards, fill in:

- Insert the thumb nail and large picture
- State title when relevant
- Choose name of photographer
- Choose country, date, locality
- Choose species from the drop-down box
- Caption when relevant
- State what kind of photo equipment used if relevant

If the species isn’t mentioned in the drop-down please state the name of the species in Danish (if it exists), then English, and finally Latin. Pleas note that all species found in VP can be found in the drop-down.

How many pictures can I upload?

Please upload no more than 1-5 pictures at a time. Should you upload more than one picture Netfugl will most likely only publish one or two pictures at once, and publish the rest later on.

How often can I upload pictures?

Netfugl encourages the photographers to abstain from uploading pictures till formerly uploaded pictures have been published, or till Netfugl has rejected the uploaded pictures. However, please send us important pictures of rare birds as quickly as possible.

In what order will the pictures be published on the website?

Regrettably, the pictures are chosen at random, and moreover, it depends on who is in charge of uploading pictures.

What pictures will be shown on the front page of Netfugl?

The pictures shown on the front page of Netfugl are the latest additions in the categories: "Latest rarity photo", "Latest photo from Denmark" and "Latest photo from abroad".

We pay no attention to the name of the photographer. However, it stands to reason that good pictures and pictures of rare birds are often placed on the front page of Netfugl.

Use of the pictures on Netfugl

All pictures are copyrighted which means that the photographers are to be contacted in case somebody wishes to use a picture.

When and how will I know whether my picture will be published on Netfugl or not?

Netfugl makes an effort to execute a request in no more than 5 days from the time a photographer has uploaded one or more pictures till the picture(s) is (are) either rejected or added to the gallery.

All photographers will be informed by e-mail sent to the e-mail address stated in your user profile. Please note that the e-mail address does not have to be visible in the profile – it does, however, have to be correct - otherwise Netfugl will not be able to contact the photographer concerning accepted or rejected pictures.

Netfugl is aware that for many of you tailoring pictures to meet our technical criteria and picture-editing in general is a challenge. We hereby encourage you to start a thread in our (?) forum in order to ask for advice and instruction of all those who already knows about picture-editing.

Best regards Netfugl.dk
