Can anyone explain what authority Netfugl uses for its WP species list?

In September 2011 the BOU, following other international bird organisations split Hudsonian Whimbrel Numenius hudsonicus (from Eurasian Whimbrel N. phaeopus) and Siberian Stonechat Saxicola maura (from European Stonechat S. rubicola). The netfugl ranking list was changed to include Siberian Stonechat, but not Hudsonian Whimbrel. Is there a reason for this?

More recently BOU has split some other WP species:
Cory’s Shearwater Calonectris diomedea to be treated as three species:
• Cory’s Shearwater Calonectris borealis
• Scopoli’s Shearwater Calonectris diomedea
• Cape Verde Shearwater Calonectris edwardsii

Madeiran Storm Petrel Oceanodroma castro to be treated as three species in the Western Palearctic:
• Cape Verde Storm Petrel Oceanodroma jabejabe
• Madeiran Storm Petrel Oceanodroma castro
• Monteiro’s Storm Petrel Oceanodroma monteiroi

Eurasian Nuthatch Sitta europaea to be treated as two species in WP:
• Siberian Nuthatch Sitta arctica - found within WP in Urals
• Eurasian Nuthatch Sitta europaea

Netfugl recognises some of these splits like Cape Verde Shearwater and Monteiro's Storm Petrel, but not the others. Again is there a reason for this?

Any information on how Netfugl decides on which species to include in its list will be appreciated.

Oooooh god it's going to be a nightmare, to identify those shearwaters.

Well it might because we dont recognise Hudsonian Whimbrel as a specie in Denmark yet, just as all the subspecies of yellow wagtail opposite to the dutch.

But honestly I dont know.

Although only available in Danish, here is what you might be looking for. (don't know when this page was last updated).

In short, it translates to something like:

Netfugl.dk follows British Ornithologists' Union Records Committee's (BOURC) decisions on taxonomy. Alternatively: Association of European Rarities Committees (AERC) for species that the BOURC haven't treated and aren't about to either.

In those few cases where the species in consideration hasn't been recorded within the BOURC covered area and AERC hasn't decided on the taxonomy, Netfugl.dk will make it's own decision on species or race status (e.g. for Thayers Gull).

As soon as BOURC or AERC has made a decision, Netfugl.dk will follow even if the decision is different from that previously made by Netfugl.dk

So... The answer is that implementation of the September 2011 decisions are delayed here at Netfugl, or what?

Limicola falcinellus, Tryngites subruficollis and Philomachus pugnax has still not been changed to
Calidris falcinellus, Calidris subruficollis and Calidris pugnax as BOURC has decided.

Thanks for all the feedback. It looks as though Netfugl does follow BOURC decisions on taxonomy. Presumably for some administrative reason the webmasters have not implemented these latest taxonomic changes. This is a shame. Hopefully someone can encourage them to keep Netfugl up to date as it is an excellent site for WP listers.

Hi Bob,

As stated above Netfugl follow the BOURC taxonomy when it comes to species treated by BOURC. When it comes to species outside the scope of BOU we follow the AERC.

But we plan to change this in the near future. The reason for this is that we are in the process of implementing a world list in relation to the gallery and the rankings.

In this context, the BOURC and the AERC taxonomy are not suitable. And therefore we plan to convert all lists etc. to follow the IOC taxonomy.

Although the plan is to have two raking totals when it comes to the WP ranking. One following the IOC and one following the AERC.

This is why the species is not fully up-to-date at the moment. The precise details I cannot give at the moment as the work is still in progress.

Hi Jens,

"that we are in the process of implementing a world list in relation to the gallery and the rankings"

Do you plan to implement some sort of (semi)automatic updating between the lists?

See: Opdatering af artslister.

Best regards,

Stig.
